Møllehøj – Denmark’s highest mountain

Despite its modest 171 meters, Møllehøj is the highest mountain in Denmark. The summit of the mountain is marked by a millstone. The height puts Denmark in a clear last place in the list of the Nordic countries’ highest mountains, with a hefty distance to the fourth highest point in Finland, Halti.

If you want to climb all the highest peaks in the Nordic countries, you must of course also walk up Møllehøj. Or maybe you just want to enjoy the feeling of having been to a country’s highest point without any strenuous hiking. If you are going to or have visited the summit, we sell nice pins, stickers and patches with Møllehøj.

Is Møllehøj the highest mountain in Denmark?

It has long been unclear which is Denmark’s highest mountain. The three most common candidates have been Yding Skovhøj, Ejer Bavnehøj and Møllehøj. In February 2005 new measurements were made which once and for all showed that Møllehøj is the highest with its 170.86m.

Yding Skovhøj is indeed higher with 172.66m but has a burial mound from the Bronze Age on top. Since man-made objects are not counted, the height without the burial mound is 170.77m and the mountain has to settle for second place in Denmark beaten by only 9cm.

Ejer Bavnehøj is only a few hundred meters from Møllehøj and it has long been thought that this could be Denmark’s highest point. But the new measurement showed the height to be 170.35m, putting it only in third place.

At the peak of Ejer Bavnehøj, a memorial monument has been built in the form of a 13m high tower. The monument was built in 1924 to commemorate the reunification of Southern Jutland with the rest of Denmark after the First World War. You can go up the tower and enjoy the view.

At Ejer Bavnehøj there is a parking lot and a kiosk that is open on weekends between May – September.

Climb Møllehøj

Climbing might be an exaggeration when it comes to getting to the peak of Møllehøj. A short walk is all it takes. The easiest way is to park the car at Ejer Bavnehøj where there are parking lots and a weekend kiosk.

From the parking lot, you now have about 350 meters of flat walk in front of you.

You first walk on a dirt road for about 150 meters. After crossing another gravel road, you continue on a path that goes next to a farmhouse. At the beginning of the path there is an information board.

The path runs on the farm’s private land but is open to the public. Due to the presence of animals on the farm, it is not allowed to bring dogs or prams into the farm.

From the information board, the trail continues for about 200 meters before reaching the highest point in Denmark. The point is marked by a mill wheel. At the site there are also benches and tables if you want to take a coffee with you.

If you don’t want to take the same route back, there is a marked path of about 1.5km that goes through a cow pasture and some forest groves before turning back to the monument at Ejer Bavnehøj. However, this path is not for those with cow fear.

How long does it take?

Allow 5-10 minutes one way from the parking lot.
