Kebnekaise is Sweden’s highest mountain and has two peaks. The north peak is 2097 meters and the south peak, which is covered in ice, varies in height but is about 2095 meters. With this height, Sweden and Kebnekaise rank third in the list of the highest mountains in the Nordic countries. Beaten by Hvannadalshnúkur (2110 meters) but higher than Halti (1324 meters).

Standing on the summit of Kebnekaise and looking out over the Kebnekaise massif is a powerful experience. On a clear day, you can see all the way across the Norwegian mountains.

We sell stylish pins, stickers and cloth badges with both the north and south peaks of Kebnekaise. Perfect to have as a memory after a successful summit tour. Or why not collect them all? We have pins and badges in the same stylish design with all the Nordic countries’ highest peaks, “The Nordic High Five”.

Which peak is highest?

The north peak of Kebnekaise consists of solid rock and is 2097 meters. The south peak of Kebnekaise is covered by a glacier and varies in height during the season. It builds up during winter and melts away in summer.

In the past, the south peak has always been the highest, but in recent years the glacier has shrunk more and more. Measurements since 2019 have shown that the south peak is now lower than the north peak in late summer. The last measurement in September 2022 showed that the south peak was 2095 meters.

It is likely that the south peak will once again be Sweden’s highest point during every winter for some years to come. But the trend is shrinking, and over the past 40 years the height of the south peak has decreased by about 20 meters. If the entire summit glacier melts, the peak will be 2060 meters and only qualify as Sweden’s fourth highest point.

How high is Kebnekaise?

The fact here applies to the north peak, which, despite the fact that the south peak is occasionally higher, is technically considered Sweden’s highest point.
